Mezzo-soprano Tanja Baumgartner is one of the most interesting discoveries of recent years. Since the 2009-2010 season, she has been a member of the Ensemble of Frankfurt Opera. Recently she has also appeared in leading roles at the Salzburg and Edinburgh Festivals, Staatsoper Berlin, Flemish Opera, and Theater Basel.
Tanja Baumgartner has enjoyed huge successes in many distinguished roles from the Italian Repertoire such as Eboli Don Carlo(2006/09/10/13), Fenena Nabucco (2009), Ulrica Un ballo in maschera (2008), Amneris Aida (2010) and the Princess de Bouillon Adriana Lecouvreur (2012), all of which were performed in Frankfurt and Basel. Following a guest engagement as Carmen at Theater Basel in 2012, she made her debut as Santuzza Cavalleria Rusticana at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. Other role debuts in season 2012/13 have included Fricka in Das Rheingold and Die Walkure at Frankfurt Opera.
In the season 13/14 she will sing Tigrana Edgar in a concert performance in Frankfurt, Brangaene Tristan und Isolde at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Iocaste Oedipe,Charlotte Werther, Foreign Princess Rusalka, Santuzza Cavalleria Rusticana, and the Verdi Requiem.
Tanja Baumgartner’s Bel Canto Technique, together with her natural affinity towards highly dramatic roles, drove her interpretation of the title role in the Othmar Schoeck opera, Penthesilea, at Theater Basel in 2008. Her performance was an “astounding triumph,” (Production of the Year, Opernwelt magazine). She then followed with engagements as the Countess Geschwitz Lulu and the Nurse Die Frau Ohne Schatten at the Salzburg Festival and Flemish Opera. At Frankfurt Opera, she took on the roles of Daphne (Strauss) and Medea (Reimann), and sang in a staged performance of the symphony, Das Lied von der Erde (Mahler). After appearing as Judith Bluebeard’s Castle with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Kent Nagano (2012) and Charlotte Die Soldaten at the Salzburg Festival (2012), she worked on a new production, The Fairy Queen (Purcell-Oehring) at the Berlin State Opera (June 2013).
Tanja Baumgartner sang in the ensemble of the Lucerne Theatre from 2002-2008 where she performed a variety of roles including Dorabella Così fan tutte, Charlotte Werther, Mistress Quickly Falstaff, Giulietta Le Conte d’Hoffmann, La Haine Armide, and Baba the TurkThe Rake’s Progress.
Tanja Baumgartner has distinguished herself on the concert platform throughout Europe with works by Bach, Beethoven, Verdi and Mahler.
After completing her violin studies at the Freiburg University of Music, Tanja Baumgartner studied singing in Karlsruhe and at the Vienna Conservatory with Professor Helena Lazarska. Since 2002 she has studied with Alexandrina Milcheva. She took master classes with Brigitte Fassbaender, Sena Jurinac, Hilde Zadek, and Hartmut Höll, and was a prize winner at the 18th Concorso Internazionale Valsesia Musica in Italy.
