Pioneer Women to Feature Lois Raye
Milwaukee Council Pioneer Women will culminate their an nual summer project Sunday, Oct. 18. 8 p.m.. at the Beth Am Center. Mrs. Jacob Cohn, program chairman, announces that the evening's program will feature Lois Raye, contralto, of Chicago. Miss Raye is well known for her performances in opera, radio, television, and concert. She was the r: LOIS RAYE winner of the Marion Anderson award, the Tribune festival, and Sun-Times Festival. Critics say, "Miss Raye has been deservedly called the 'Marian Anderson Voice'. She has a remarkable range and a voice of velvety texture, and her sympathetic interpretation of each number constitutes a rare treat." Her program will include Israeli. Yiddish. Negro spiritual, and semi-classical selections; accompanied at the piano by Melvin Marcus Funds raised here are sent to the Moetzet Hapoalot (Working Women's Council), sister organization of the Pioneer Women, in Israel, where they are used to maintain 779 institutions, including agricultural schools, day nurseries, and vocational training schools in 141 centers. Stein Completes Seventh Season As Director
The Community Symphony Orchestra of Chicago will conclude its seventh season under the direction of Leon Stein in a program to be given Sunday afternoon, May 17, at Thorne Hall. The featured soloists will be Jean Stern, pianist, and Lois Raye, contralto. Miss Stern has appeared as soloist with the Chicago Civic Orchestra and with the Chicago Symphonay Chamber Orchestra on TV. She is one of the outstanding talents among Chicago's younger pianists. She will perform the Schumann "Concerto in A Minor." Miss Lois Raye, winner of the Marian Anderson award in 1950/51, has appeared as soloist on Mutual's Chicago Theater of the Air, on the N.B.C. program "America's Music" and has performed in numerous operatic roles. Miss Raye will be heard in Arias by Saint Saens and Donizetti. Both Miss Stern and Miss Raye were selected in competitive auditions for their appearance with the Community Symphony.The orchestral portion of the program will include Massenet's "Scenes Pittoresques" and Leon Stein's "Passacaglia."
