Tanja Ariane Baumgartner has been a member of the ensemble at the Frankfurt Opera since 2009/2010. Roles that brought her great success in Frankfurt include Cornelia (Giulio Cesare in Egitto), the Princess of Bouillon (Adriana Lecouvreur), Eboli (Don Carlo), Fricka (Rheingold and Walküre), Gora in the German premiere of Reimann's Medea (published on CD by OehmsClassics), Emilia (Verdi’sOtello), Fenena (Nabucco), the Nurse (Die Frau ohne Schatten), the Foreign Princess (Rusalka), Iocaste (Oedipe), Tigrana (Puccini's Edgar), Charlotte (Werther), Gaea (Daphne) and the title role in Othmar Schoeck's Penthesilea. This last production, which had previously been shown in Basel, was voted „Production of the Year 2008“ by the Opernwelt Magazine critics and brought Baumgartner international regard.
Her Frankfurt schedule for the season 2016/17 includes the leading mezzo parts in Xerxes, Les Troyens and Rake’s Progress. Internationally she will sing Rheingold-Fricka at Lyric Opera Chicago, Kostelnicka in Jenufa in Santiago de Chile as well as Ortrud in Lohengrin at State Opera Hamburg. In summer 2017 she will have her debut at Bayreuth Festival as Fricka in Ring des Nibelungen. Besides her opera engagements she will be heard in Mahler’s Das klagende Lied in Vienna. The mezzosoprano made her debut at the Salzburger Festspiele in 2010, where she sang Geschwitz in Lulu (two years later she was Charlotte in Zimmermann'sSoldaten). She gave guest performances at the Basel Theatre (role debuts as Amneris in Aida and in 2011/2012 as Carmen, both directed by Calixto Bieito), at the Opéra de Marseille (Eugen Onegin), at the De Vlaamse Opera in Gent/Antwerpen (the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten), at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana) and at the Berliner Staatsoper (AscheMOND or the Fairy Queen). In summer 2013 Tanja Baumgartner made her debut at the Royal Opera House in London as Clairon in Strauss’ Capriccio and made a guest performance at the Edinburgh Festival, singing the role of Judith in Bartoks one-acter Herzog Blaubarts Burg. In May 2014 Baumgartner debuted at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Brangäne. During the 2014/2015 season for the first time she was a guest performer at the Staatsoper Hamburg and she made her debut at the Wiener Konzertverein. Apart from her commitments in Frankfurt Tanja Baumgartner has appeared in 15/16 in Toulouse as Judith in Herzog Blaubarts Burg, at Theater an der Wien as Clairon in Capriccio and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde. Baumgartner was an ensemble member of the Lucerne Theatre from 2002 to 2008. She studied violin at the Fribourg Conservatory, then singing in Karlsruhe, Vienna and Sofia. © Tanja Ariane Baumgartner
