This weeks Aria of the Week is Vivaldi's "Gemo in un punto e fremo" from L'Olimpiade. Sara Mingardo is magnificent here, performing the piece with real passion and fire. My favourite part of the aria is the descending demi-demiquavers in the continuo.
Below is a video of Zakai performing the Urlicht by Mahler.
Below is a video of Musacchio performing the role of La Zia Principessa by Puccini.
Delphine Galou has a new webiste! Filled with loads of great info, videos and audio clips, Delphine's new site is a great place to find out more about this fantastic singer. Check out the videos of her singing "Terribile d'aspetto" and "Amorosa e men irata" on the Videos Page.
This weeks Aria of the Week is Sonia Prina's magnificent interpretation of Vivaldi's "La sull'eterna Sponda". Taken from the opera Motezuma, the aria is for Mitrena, Motezuma's wife. Check out Prina's low register in the da capo, with a couple of very resonant F#3's.
The last Claramae Aria of the Day is "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" from C. Saint- Saëns' Samson et Dalila. This was one of the first arias I heard by Claramae Turner, and her sensuous and seductive interpretation has been the benchmark against which I judge every other version. I leave you all with this wonderful aria as a final tribute to the great Claramae Turner.
Today's Claramae Aria of the Day is "Adieu fôrets" from Tchaikovsky's The Maid of Orleans. Notice how well she sustains the high sections in this scene.
Today's Claramae Aria of the Day is Carmen's Habanera by G. Bizet. Turner's sultry contralto is perfect for the seductive and dangerous Carmen.
Today's Claramae video is of her singing "Angel of Mercy" or "Voce di Donna" from Poncelli's La Gioconda.
Today's Claramae Turner video is the tortured "Afraid, Am I Afraid?" from Menotti's opera The Medium. Claramae Turner was engaged to sing Madame Flora by Gian-Carlo Menotti for the world premiere performances of The Medium beginning 8 May 1946. She subsequently performed it many times in her career.
From this recording, you can see why she would make a good Klytemnestra :)
